Dr. Emily Poynter , BSc., DVM.
Emily grew up in rural Ottawa. She had the dream and drive to work with animals from a very young age. Growing up she had horses, dogs and cats. Emily started her career in the veterinary field as a Registered Veterinary Technician here in Nova Scotia in 2008. After a few years in the field she made the decision to further her education and fulfill her aspiration of being a Veterinarian. Emily attended the Atlantic Veterinary College in PEI, where she completed the DVM program. She came back to beautiful Nova Scotia after graduation and lives in Hubley with Dan and their crew of furry children – Harley, Ellie, Dory and Savannah.
Having fulfilled the dream of becoming a Veterinarian, Emily is now so excited to embark on the adventure of small business ownership. She is so happy to have created Hammonds Plains Veterinary Hospital alongside her co-owner William, her husband Dan, and great friend and colleague Deidra.
Dr. William Hoskin, BSc., DVM.
Dr. William Hoskin was born and raised in Head of St. Margaret’s Bay, N.S. From a young age he developed a keen interest in science and a love for animals.
After graduating from high school Will pursued his interests, completing a Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Science and Aquaculture at the Nova Scotia Agricultural College before going on to complete his Doctor
of Veterinary Medicine at the Atlantic Veterinary College in PEI.
Since becoming a veterinarian, Will has practiced in the Tantallon area. During this time he met and worked with Dr. Emily Poynter, learning of their similar drive and ambitions and helping each other through the daily challenges of veterinary practice.
Will knew he would ultimately one day have his own clinic. In 2019 this dream was finally realized. The Hammonds Plains Veterinary Hospital was born from a desire to provide a high standard of veterinary care as well as an excellent client experience to the community.
When not working, Will enjoys spending time at the barn with his wife Deidra and their horse Geneva.
Deidra Hoskin, RVT.
Deidra was born in Ottawa, but spent most of her years growing up in Quispamsiss N.B where she discovered her passion for animals at an early age through horseback riding and caring for numerous family pets. She worked at several veterinary practices as a Veterinary Assistant before deciding to attended the Nova Scotia Agricultural College, where she met her future husband and graduated as a Registered Veterinary Technician. Deidra brings her passion and attention to detail to the HPVH team with over 10 years of experience as a practicing Veterinary Technician, as well as experience teaching the RVT curriculum.
Deidra lives in Upper Tantallon with her husband William. Outside of the hospital, she if often found spending her time at the barn with her horse Geneva.
Rebecca Higgs, RVT.
Born and raised in New Glasgow, NS, Rebecca found her love of animals.
She didn’t always know from the beginning that she wanted to pursue a career in veterinary medicine. However, her curiosity of the field and the passion for animal care drove her to attend the Veterinary Technician Program at the Dalhousie Agricultural Campus in Truro.
Rebecca could not believe how much that this career path had to offer. She knew from her first semester of classes that she was meant to be a veterinary technician.
Now residing in Halifax, Rebecca shares her home and her heart with two beautiful orange kitties named Tod & Copper. She is hopeful to bring a canine companion into her family in the new year!
Dan grew up in England and moved to Canada with his family when he was 8 years old. He completed his post-secondary education in Ontario and moved to the East Coast with Emily in 2008. Now all these years later, they consider Nova Scotia home and are so happy to reside in such a beautiful province! They live in Hubley with their crew of furry children – Harley, Ellie, Dory and Savannah.
Dan has been surrounded by veterinary medicine for close to 15 years, when he met Emily. He has been a huge support to Emily in following her dreams to become a Veterinarian and has travelled and worked in many different fields. Their dream of opening a hospital has now become a reality and they couldn’t be more thrilled. Dan has been instrumental in the creation of Hammonds Plains Veterinary Hospital and we are lucky to have him as our office manager.
